An Introduction to Our Beliefs God is our Father - the literal Father of our spirits (a spirit is the part of us that leaves the body when we die). He loves us, His children, and wants us to return and live with Him. He sent us to Earth to learn and progress. Jesus Christ is more than a prophet. He is the Son of God, and our elder Brother. He suggested a plan wherein we could come to Earth to learn and progress, and He created the Earth under the direction of God. He came to Earth to do the will of our Father (God) - that is, (a) to atone for our sins (so we can repent and return to God), (b) to suffer death and be resurrected, thus allowing us all to be resurrected, and (c) to set a perfect example and teach people. He did all this because He loved us and He suffered all things to obey the will of the Father. Satan (Lucifer, the Devil) is also one of our brothers, but he and one-third of the hosts of heaven rebelled against God and the Plan. His whole purpose became devoted to leading us away into misery and darkness. We believe in the same organization as that which Jesus organized. We have 12 apostles, and we have a prophet who receives revelation for the Church from God. These leaders, and all worthy male members above a certain age, hold the priesthood of God, which is the authority to use God's power to give blessings and administer the ordinances of the Church (baptism, the sacrament/communion, etc). We believe the Bible to be the word of God (as far as it is translated correctly), written by His prophets. We also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God, and scripture. The Book of Mormon is a companion, not a rival, to the Bible. It speaks of the ancient inhabitants of the Americas from c. 600 BC to 400 AD, who came from Jerusalem before its destruction. It was translated from metal plates that Joseph was given, through the power of God, by Joseph Smith, Jr., in the early 1800s. He was the first prophet in this dispensation (time period of history), and there have been prophets to lead the church ever since. Revelation continues to come forth. Joseph Smith restored Christ's church to the earth under the direction of God and Christ. He had gone into the woods to pray about which church to join, and as he prayed he received a vision: God the Father and Jesus Christ literally appeared unto him. They told him that he had been called before the world was formed to restore the Gospel to the earth in its fullness, with all the rights, powers and authorities that had existed in days of old.
